(Cover) The end of Tokio Hotel?
(1st page) After more than a year in the studio, Tokio Hotel come back with new album that they rely heavily on. But will the public go for it? All is at stake in this comeback that nobody knows the outcome of...

Absence
It must be said, it was a moment when we had no news of Tokio Hotel. A little over a year ago, probably exhausted by an overdose of promotion, the Quartet decided to cut ties with the French press. Radio silence. After a long trip to the US, TH had gone into the studio for an indefinite time. We even ended up believing that the boys would never come out from their bubble, perhaps frightened by the outside world which had become too hostile for them. Yet here we are on Friday, September 4th, and Nicolas and myself (Arnaud in this case) have an appointment with Bill, Tom, Gustav, and Georg for an exclusive interview later in a luxury Parisian hotel. It's been almost two years since we have seen the group face to face. The last time, it was March of 2008, during their concert at Paris Bercy. But today, TH are back in France for the release of their new album called Humanoid. And the least we can say is that many questions are surrounding this comeback. Firstly, and this is something that we saw for ourselves through letters and emails we receive, the long months of absence has been due to the patience of some fans, who preferred to leave the Tokio Hotel ship. Certainly, the immovable fans will hold out, but are they sufficient in number? Will Bill and his band regain an audience that seems to have already forgotten them? This is the big question that everyone asks. However, our first conclusion came at this 4-star Paris hotel: the fans are indeed present. There are over a hundred of them, and we learned from the press that there were three times as many the day before, about 400, during the event. Morale therefore seems good and some already available on the internet track names from the new album have generally been well received. At least the ones sung in German; the fans have not come to a decision about the English versions of the songs! In short, we are reassured. After this temperature test of the fans, we enter the lobby of the hotel, where we see several bodyguards placed at strategic locations. After the famous episodes of the "Gang of Afghanes", the security has been increased around the band and there is hint of paranoia in the atmosphere. This isn't the time to be smartasses, the gorillas have their eyes on us...
Reunion
It is now time to enter the heart of the matter: our private talk with the band. Because of the tight schedule, we cannot stay more than 20 minutes with Gustav, Georg, Tom and Bill (it's sometimes good to change the usual order of names), and we have a long list of questions to ask them. We'll have to play it tight! With a slight delay (the band was held in order to view the final version of their new music video, which must be posted on their official website in hours), our German friends have finally appeared. We first notice their physical transformation: they are all tall and thin, as if they'd been put under a rolling pin! This change is particularly evident in Bill, who is taller than ever and seems to have grown a good dozen centimeters. Certainly, he wears boots with heels worthy of a pair of Louboutin pumps, but still, he seems to have grown, like Tom and Gustav. Always so cool and relaxed, the band take their place facing us. They have not lost their old good habits,

during the entire interview, Gustav and Georg remain practically silent, leaving it to Bill and Tom to answer the questions. We start our recorder. Here we go!
We've heard that you've just seen the final version of the Automatic video. Are you satisfied?
Tom: This time, yes! In fact, there had been a previous version a few days ago and we were not entirely happy with it, so we requested that some changes be made. It is not easy to obtain a result that one is 100% satisfied with, but I think we eventually got there.
Bill: In fact, I think we will eventually make all our own music videos, it will be simpler. We immediately get the result we really want. Especially since this video cost us a fortune!
Let's talk now about your new album, which took longer than expected to arrive. Did you settle a lot of questions during the recording of this disc? Were you for instance afraid that certain pieces would destabilize your fans?
Tom: If we took long, it was because we experimented a lot in the studio. There were a bunch of songs that we did not keep because we wanted a selection broad enough to ultimately get the best album possible. For us, this album represents a new stage in the evolution of the band. We feel that we've turned a corner with this record. But the fans can be assured, it's still Tokio Hotel.
Did you have moments of doubt during the creation of Humanoid?
Tom: In fact, it's at this time we began to doubt. We approach the release of the album and one wonders how the record is going to be received by the fans. Actually, we're a bit on edge there...
Bill: Yes, we've felt a little nervous and feverish the past few days. The instant of the album's release is a little scary, but mostly exciting. In any case, we are happy with what we made. We have no regrets and that is the most important thing.
Do you think that there's a possibility that this album won't do as well as the previous two?
Bill: Frankly, we try not to let that thought cross our minds too much. We didn't want to put too much pressure on our shoulders, otherwise, for sure, we'll crack playing live! Tom: What we told ourselves is that we did nothing wrong. As Bill explained, we really feel we've made our best album yet, and that was the original idea. So of course, if it doesn't work, we'll be disappointed and sad. We'll see...
It was said that there were tensions within the band during recording. Gustav was even on the verge of leaving the band. True or false?
Tom: If the rumors were true, since the band started, Gustav would have felt like leaving Tokio Hotel every two months. If he had really wanted to, eventually it would've happened! Bill: Don't forget that we've known each other for ten years. We always stayed united, whatever difficulties we went through. And this is not ready to change.
"People have always looked at us strangely..." -Tom
Gustav, we still want to hear your opinion on it...
Gustav: I don't know where these rumors come from. Especially since it's not me who really wants to leave the band, but Georg. If there is someone who leaves one day, I think it'll be him. [laughs]
During the recording of your album, you often made headlines because of things that had nothing to do with your music. In particular, there was Tom's aggression towards a group of fans who harassed you for weeks. Did this destabilize you?
Bill: Yes, this has affected us a lot. It's destabilized us not only during the recording of the album, but also for our whole lives because it was the first time we were followed and harassed in this way.
Tom: Yes, for the first time we not only feared for our lives, but also for those of our families. These fans really went too far. It was a pretty traumatic experience. Of course, I should have kept my composure. But it had reached the point where the situation became unbearable. I am glad that this is behind us now.
There was also Gustav's fight, from which he came out looking pretty bashed up. So what happened exactly?
Tom: What happened is that three guys came at Gustav and they hit him good in the face. There's not much else to say.
Today, is everything good Gustav?
Gustav: Yes, yes, everything's fine. I don't have any aftereffects of this fight. But I must admit that it was hot.
As for Tom, there was a lot of talk about your alleged relationship with a certain Chantelle Paige. So what can you tell us about that?
Tom: [With an air of mystery] Well, that's not the first I've been seen with a girl, is it? This story has taken on enormous proportions and it has shocked certain fans. But I do not see what is so shocking about going out with a pretty girl. What would be shocking, would be to see Georg in the arms of a beautiful woman. When this happens, you'll have reasons to be really shocked! [laughs]
As for the cover of Humanoid, it's rather puzzling. What is the message behind it? What is it, to be a humanoid?
Bill: I am not particularly a fan of science fiction, but I think this cover is perfect for the album. For us, Humanoid reflects our sense of being a bit
(4th page)
in the margin and different.
Tom: Ever since we were kids and made music, people have always looked at us strangely, and it felt like we were being asked, "But from where do they come, those things there?" [laughs]
Bill: Humanoid, it also describes the deep feeling of life we have in us, this desire to experience things fully.
Tom, Gustav, and Georg, does it upset you that you aren't on the cover?
Tom: [laughs] Not at all. We even nearly used a version where none of us were visible. There, Bill is on it, it's not bad. I think it looks great, this cover.
Bill: There's never a conflict of egos between us. Let me make things clear that I didn't ask to be alone on the cover. It was simply agreed that this was the one that best reflected the spirit of the album.
It seems that you are going to participate in the soundtrack of Temptation. Is that true?
Bill: No. At one point, it was really a question of whether we'd give a song for the soundtrack, but, for various reasons, it didn't happen. Anyway, we hope that it'll happen for one of two remaining movies! We'd be really proud to participate in such a great adventure.
By the way, what do you think of the Twilight phenomenon?
Tom: We're total fans!
Bill: In fact, we saw it not too long ago. But we'd heard so much about it that we ended up going to see it. And I loved it! The actors are top, the production is superb. It's really a great movie and I look forward to seeing more. In any case, it'd be really cool if we could participate in the soundtrack of one of the films. I'm crossing my fingers...
Let's talk a bit about your new look. Do you try to match with each other?
Bill: No, not at all. As for me, I always liked to be transformed, I constantly experiment with new looks. The others can do what they want. I didn't ask Tom to dye his hair black! [laughs]
Tom: And even then, we don't all have a new look. Look at Georg, apart from losing a few a pounds, he is always the same!
By the way, Georg, do you want to dye your hair black like the others?
Georg: No. And even if I wanted to, there was no more dye. The others had already used it all. [laughs]
Tom: Especially Gustav, who overdid it. He exhausted the supply of dye... [laughs]
Conclusion
This is the last question we are able to ask today. As we say farewell, we wish Bill and his band good luck for the release of Humanoid on October 2nd. And something tells us that if they're lucky, they'll return to the front of the stage. In effect, since we conducted this interview, we saw that you were likely to be totally indifferent to the return of Tokio Hotel, if not completely hostile. Is this already the end? After going up so high in such a short time, could Bill, Tom, Gustav and Georg have a dizzying descent into hell? Only time will tell for sure...

He is dressed in all black and has something on his head that's supposed to be a hat. What do you think?" [September 9th]
